SPECULATIONS ON THE BREAKDOWN OF SCALING AT 10 - 15 cM J

چکیده
Hints from existing data suggest that deviations from scaling behavior should appear at momenta ]q21 ;G (20 GeV2). We interpret the deviations as due to structure of the hadronic constituents at 10 -IL5 cm . and make experimental predictions. The observed scaling behavior for deep inelastic electron scattering suggests that hadrons may be composed of point-like spin l/2 constituents (partons) from which the virtual photon scatters incoherently, 1 In configuration space, one says that the virtual photon is probing the leading light cone singularity of the current commutator. 2 The picture seems almost too good to be true, in that the onset of this presumably asymptotic phenomenon occurs for surprisingly small values of the mass (Q 2 5 -q 2 ) and laboratory energy (v) of the virtual photon. Nonetheless, it is tempting to proclaim that we have glimpsed the elementary, structureless building blocks from which hadrons are constructed: that nothing remains between us and the light cone. Here we wish to propose a less exuberant perspective on the meaning of scaling: that it represents the shedding of just another layer of the onion, 3 and that hints of the structures to be discovered in the next _----T-7 layer are already in evidence. Our view is old-fashioned,4 in that it -*Work supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. (Submitted to Physical Review Letters)

SPECULATIONS ON THE BREAKDOWN OF SCALING AT lo - I 5 CM
-We discuss the hypothesis that scaling in deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering is a “preasymptotic” phenomenon, which will be broken at energies large enough to probe the structure of the constituents of the nucleon. In particular, we consider a model in which the constituents are light (i.e., M 5 Mp) and are bound by a very heavy gluon (MG 7: Mp), which induces a small “size” in the con...
متن کاملEffect of soil structure breakdown on splash erosion in different soil textures
This study was carried out to investigate the role of soil structure in splash erosion in semi-arid soils. Splash erosion was measured in four soil textures (silty clay loam, sandy clay loam, silt loam and sandy loam) with two soil structure conditions (with natural structure and under aggregate breakdown) using a simulated rainfall with 50 mmh-1 in intensity for 30 min in splash caps with 10-c...
متن کاملPolyethylene Glycol Repairs Damaged Membrane; Biophysical Application of Artificial Planar Bilayer to Mimic Biological Membrane
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrophilic polymer, known to be capable to fuse numerous single cells in vitro, to join the membranes of adjacent neurons and giant invertebrate axons, and to seal damaged neural membranes. The molecular mechanism of the action of PEG is still unknown. It is believed that PEG dehydrates membranes and enables their structural components to resolve and rearrange in...
متن کاملEvaluation of Electrical Breakdown of Anodic Films on Titanium in Phosphate-base Solutions
Titanium is a highly reactive metal so that a thin layer of oxide forms on its surface whenever exposed to the air or other environments containing oxygen. This layer increases the corrosion resistance of titanium. The oxide film is electrochemically formed through anodizing. In this study, anodizing of titanium was performed in phosphate-base solutions such as H3Po4, NaH2Po4, and Na2Hpo4 at 9....

In this paper, for the first time, the effect of the substrate doping of 22nm double-insulating UTBB silicon-on-insulator device on the switching performance and turn-on delay of the transistor is investigated. In UTBB devices, the substrate voltage is varied from positive to zero then negative voltages to trade-off transistor speed against the leakage current. Various circuit design procedures...
